July "High Desert" Bird-Of-The-Month:  California Quail

California QuailCalifornia Quail Male

The California Quail is a medium quail with a distinctive, curled black head plume and white-bordered black throat. Its breast is gray and belly is sharply scaled. The flanks are brown with white streaks and its back is olive-brown. Legs and feet are gray.

They forage on the ground for seeds, fruits, berries and insects and will readily eat cracked corn, berries and millet from ground trays.

 Fun Facts:

  • Multiple California Quail broods may mix after hatching and are attended by all the parents of those broods.Quail Family

  • The topknot looks like a single feather, but it is actually a cluster of six overlapping plumes.

  • They can fly well but prefer walking.

  • California Quail live in coveys and enjoy community dust baths. Many quail chicks are precocial, which means relatively mature and mobile from the moment of hatching, so they can leave the nest with their parents.

  • California Quail are ground dwelling birds. If startled, ground quail explode into short fast flight.Baby Quails

  • They prefer to run from threats.

  • Adults that engage in communal brooding live longer than adults that do not.

  • They lay 12 to16 eggs in a shallow ground depression lined with grass.

  • They make a loud distinctive "Chi-ca-go" sound, which is interesting since they've never been to Chicago and are found only on the west coast.
